OUR STORY

The Gutierrez Family opened up their first restaurant Cantamar, which means “Song of the Sea” after the fishing town they visited on the coast of the Baja Peninsula where the family vacationed. The tiny coastal village became a place of inspiration to them and on February 14th, 1981 Cantamar opened it’s doors to the Huntington Beach community.

All recipes are from Granny Esperanza Gutierrez, Raymond’s mother. She was an excellent cook, who passed on her cooking skills to her son, Raymond. Years later Raymond then passed on the recipes and teachings to his daughter Alice.

The style of cooking drew inspirations from El Paso, where Granny Esperanza lived. The recipes were taught to our chefs who now cook these delicious family meals for our loyal customers. Alice runs the kitchen with her head cooks now. Today other family members take part in the family business including Raymond’s other daughters Sylvia Ford and Susan Arrieta as well as son Edward Gutierrez who helps when he can.

You can still see the matriarchs of Don Ramon’s, Ray and Sally in the restaurant from time to time checking in and greeting our guests. Please say hello as we strive to treat our customers like they are family!

Reviews

Don Ramon’s is back. Couldn’t wait to get into the new space and taste some of the great lunch staples. The bean dip and salsa with fresh chips were right on point. If you want an extra kick, ask them for the hot table salsa. The 2 item lunch special was just the right amount of food and good comfort you expect from Don Ramon’s. They are still in the early stages of re-opening but the family and staff are doing everything to make you feel at home again.

The new location is amazing! Decor is so beautiful and they are serving all the old dishes, but introduced new dishes as well. The bar is large and they offer a whole new bar menu!

Hands down our go-to for chips-n-salsa (with a delicious side of beans) and an ice cold Victoria! A warm bowl of albondigas soup hits the spot every time!
